Nel settembre del 1941, a causa dell'assedio nazista alla città di Leningrado, tra le campagne militari più devastanti e brutali della storia moderna, i cittadini sono costretti alla fuga. Tra questi anche Kostya e Nastya, due giovani innamorati che trovano riparo a bordo della fatiscente chiatta 752 che durante la notte viene colpita al largo da una violenta tempesta, venendo disastrosamente danneggiata. Sul luogo della tragedia i primi ad arrivare non saranno i soccorritori ma gli aerei nemici.
