Wikipedia - Birds is the third solo album by New Zealand artist Bic Runga, released in New Zealand and Ireland on November 28, 2005. The "Limited Australian Tour Edition" was released in Australia on March 4, 2006. Release is the United Kingdom is expected to be on May 15. Birds was the New Zealand Herald's 2005 album of the year, and was Bic's third #1 album chart entry in New Zealand, garnering platinum status in its first week. It went to double platinum by the end of its second week, and has been certified triple platinum thus far. RIANZ ranked Birds as 20th in the New Zealand Top 50 Albums of 2005 even though it has only charted for five weeks—from its release until the end of the year. Birds entered the Australian charts at position 26 on the week ending March 13, 2006. It peaked at #20 in the Irish and Dutch Charts respectively. The album was mixed in London with the help of Simon Gogerly.

Taking the role of album producer herself, Bic convened her band that included Neil Finn (Piano and Guitar) in Auckland's Monte Cecilia House in August 2005. Built in 1879, with wonderfully detailed architecture complete with parquet floors, elaborate ceiling roses, marble fireplaces and four-storeyed tower overlooking a wooded park. Bic's approach for the album harked back to jazz recordings of the 50s and beyond and the timeless pop recordings from before single instrument track-laying became the norm in the 1970s. There is a natural intimacy between instruments and voices playing live in the same room. By the time an eight piece string section and further instrumentation including French horn, flute, harp and clarinet had been added, the intricate arrangements and richly textured songs took shape.
