AKIRA YOSHIMURA (1927-2006) was an award-winning Japanese novelist who penned disturbing, psychologically complex stories. He published over 20 novels, of which On Parole and Shipwrecks are internationally known and have been translated into several languages.
ONE MAN’S JUSTICE (1978) is a story of timeless relevance that brings to mind other classic anti-war novels. World War II is over, and Japan is in shambles; the occupying U.S. military forces are intensifying their manhunt for suspected war criminals. Fearing that his involvement in the execution of a number of American pilots will be discovered, Takuya, an ex-officer in the Imperial Army, becomes a fugitive in his own country.
SHIPWRECKS (1982) is a haunting and austerely beautiful novel of medieval Japan. It gracefully recounts the attempts of a young boy to keep his family alive against the odds, and the daily struggles of impoverished people to retain -- and even create -- their humanity under conditions in which mere survival is an achievement.
ON PAROLE (1988) chronicles the release of a man from a life sentence for having murdered his unfaithful wife and his struggles to readjust to an unforgiving society he no longer recognizes. In a spare yet powerful style, Yoshimura paints the psychology of a quiet man navigating his way through the unsuspected traumas of freedom-finding a job, finding a home, even something as simple as buying an alarm clock, only to be drawn inexorably back to the scene of his crime.
STORM RIDER (1999) is a great sea adventure and historical record of two nineteenth-century countries in the making. A young boy is caught in a violent storm on the Pacific and rescued by an American ship that takes him to San Francisco. Years later, he finally returns to a Japan stirred into violence, even while America is in the midst of its bloody Civil War, and there is no place he can call home.
