Topaz is a 1969 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
Universal had bought the rights to Leon Uris's spy book Topaz. In presenting the film project to the press, Hitchcock utters these words:

«I am here to present the next film that I intend to make within the year. It's based on a novel that has been on the bestseller list for over thirty weeks. "
(Alfred Hitchcock, Variety, May 8, 1968.)

The novel is based on a real event, the Affaire Sapphire of 1962, when during the crisis with Cuba the Americans discovered that within the De Gaulle government, the French Nato representative, Georges Paques, was actually a spy in the service of the KGB. since 1943.
Hitchcock entrusts the roles of the characters to non-famous actors: John Forsythe was the only one who had already worked with him in The Conspiracy of the Innocents. Some, due to the short working time, had been contacted when shooting had begun: Claude Jade was hired in Paris and was referred to him by François Truffaut with whom she had recently worked; Karin Dor was awarded the part when the crew, who had already shot several takes, returned to Hollywood. A particular case concerns the actor Aram Katcher, hired in the part of the chief of the Cuban police, who was not liked and, without his knowing it, was replaced by Roberto Contreras to whom Hitchcock had all the scenes redone.
