Description:

* Anne Applebaum - Gulag: A History and other works (8 books)

ANNE APPLEBAUM (b. 1964)
is a Polish-American journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian who has written extensively about the history of Communism and the development of civil society in Central and Eastern Europe. She is a staff writer for The Atlantic magazine and a senior fellow at The Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, where she co-directs a program on disinformation and 21st century propaganda.

As foreign correspondent for The Economist and The Independent, Applebaum covered the fall of the Berlin Wall and the fall of communism. Her first book, BETWEEN EAST AND WEST: ACROSS THE BORDERLANDS OF EUROPE (1994), is a travelogue that describes the rise of nationalism across the new states of the former Soviet Union.

GULAG: A HISTORY (2003) was widely acclaimed, winning the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction and also nominated for a National Book Award. It narrates the history of the Soviet concentration camps system, drawing heavily on Soviet-era archives and on the diaries and writings of camp survivors, including the works of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Varlam Shalamov, and Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, among many others. David Remnick, at The New Yorker, wrote: "Through copious quotation and anecdote, Applebaum methodically, and unflinchingly, provides a sense of what it was like to enter and inhabit the netherworld of the Gulag" and as drawing on "an impressive range of sources—camp memoirs, literary works, archival material, personal interviews, and histories in a variety of languages."

This was followed by IRON CURTAIN: THE CRUSHING OF EASTERN EUROPE 1944–56 (2012), describing the imposition of Soviet totalitarianism in Central Europe after the Second World War. It was nominated for a National Book Award and shortlisted for the 2013 PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award. RED FAMINE: STALIN'S WAR ON UKRAINE (2017) is a history of the Holodomor, a man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine from 1932 to 1933 that killed millions of Ukrainians.

Her most recent book, THE TWILIGHT OF DEMOCRACY: THE SEDUCTIVE LURE OF AUTHORITARIANISM (2020) is partly a memoir and partly political analysis. It discusses democratic decline and the rise of right-wing populist politics with authoritarian tendencies in three main case studies (Poland, the UK, and the U.S.), and focuses in particular on the intellectuals, whom she labels "clercs", who provide the intellectual justifications for a descent into authoritarianism.

Applebaum has been a vocal critic of Western conduct regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine, arguing that the U.S. and its allies should not continue to enable "the existence of a corrupt Russian regime that is destabilizing Europe". In November 2022, Applebaum was one of 200 Americans sanctioned by Russia for "promotion of the Russophobic campaign and support for the regime in Kyiv."
