Note : I've been curious about the Brazilian Coffin Joe films ever since hearing about them ages ago, but I've been put off by the lack of even a decent HD transfer. Here, though, is the first of a series of 4k remasters sponsored by Arrow, and I finally got to take a good look at this film. It's not sophisticated, but even though the whole writer/director/lead actor thing brings to mind some of the most misguided indie film efforts in history, it's not a bad film per se, just kind of simple, both in story, in (over)acting, and in production design and everything else. Well worth a look, and I'm curious to see the other films (which I'll get around to).
In a small Brazilian town, the local undertaker, Zé do Caixão, is basically an edgy teenager who disparages emotions and superstition, avoids personal hygiene like trimming his nails, and goes around in a top hat and cape. He's also obsessed with having an heir to continue his bloodline, but his wife is barren, so he kills her and starts a relentless campaign of rape, murder, and eye-gouging with his disgusting fingernails to desperately knock up someone in town. The police are unable to find any evidence against him (for not very specified reasons), so he seems unstoppable, but a local gypsy tells him he's going to get his comeuppance, as well as predicting the future a bit, but he disregards her, since FACTS DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS, and finally pays the supernatural price for his arrogance. Unrepentant asshole gets what's coming to him, basically.
This is a very nice and clean remaster, showing off an impressive amount of detail in the shadows (sometimes this film is frankly underexposed, other times it's kind of just nice and dark). Image quality is pretty much perfect. Sound is fine too, and the commentary track is good if you're at all interested in this unique filmmaker and his work.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “ hevk horror” for more horrible and shocking goings-on, “ hevk serial-killer” for more repeat offenders, usually with better dress sense, or “ hevk 60s” for more from the decade when gothic horror was everywhere, including, apparently, rural Brazil.
