Of the country singer/songwriters identified with the "Outlaw" movement of the 1970s, one of the most interesting was also the least famous: Billy Joe Shaver. Shaver wrote wonderful songs--earthy yet whimsical and articulate--that were covered by his friends Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson (and later by the Allman Brothers and Elvis Presley, among others), yet mainstream stardom eluded him. But judging from the live set that is UNSHAVEN, it hasn't slowed him any--in fact, maturity seems to have made Shaver more robust than before. Backed a hot, tight, blues- and rock-influenced band featuring his son Eddy on guitar, Shaver presents many of his best and most well-known songs with no-tomorrow gusto and bravura. Son Eddy plays scorching lead guitar, combining honky-tonk twang with raw rockin' energy. The elder Shaver commands the audience's attention with his big, booming, slightly raspy yet comforting voice that effortlessly communicates the warmth and wisdom that comes from living through--and learning from--the hard times while holding onto the good ones.
