While there, he begins a passionate affair with René's young wife, Isabelle (Clémence Poésy), eventually convincing her to leave her abusive husband for him. Years later, long after events have conspired to send them both their separate ways, Stephen, now witnessing the full horror of life on the Western Front, decides to make contact with the only woman he ever loved.
