Black Mountain released their third album, Wilderness Heart, back in 2010 to mostly rave reviews, including an esteemed Polaris Music Prize nod. On April 1st, the Vancouver alt rockers will follow up that LP with IV.
Due out via Jagjaguwar, the 10-track effort was recorded with producer Randall Dunn, known for his work with Sunn O))) and Marissa Nadler, at his own Avast! studio in Seattle. The band Stephen McBean, Jeremy Schmidt, Amber Webber, and Joshua Wells had the additional help of bassist Arjan Miranda (formerly of S.T.R.E.E.T.S, Children, and The Family Band). According to an official statement, IV is an “unapologetically ambitious record made by a group of musicians who are at the peak of their powers.
” It includes titles like “Florian Saucer Attack”, “Constellations”, and “Cemetery Breeding”, which drummer Joshua Wells describes as “a dark pop song with an emotive urgency to it that taps into my teenaged eyeliner-and-trenchcoat wearing sensibilities.”
The statement mentions AC/DC, King Krimson, and Kraftwerk as influences, but Wells makes it a point to emphasize the record’s use of space. “It’s like painting,” he says. “All sound colour. And space is really important. People think of us as this heavy rock band – and we are sometimes – but it has to be tempered with space. There has to be these emotional cues. It’s not just about rocking out.”
