Note : Hideo Nakata returns to adapt Koji Suzuki again after the success of Ringu, and while this wasn't the megahit the previous one was, this is still well worth your time. Instead of the lore-heavy, convoluted plot of Ringu, here we get a tight, location-bound slow burn with a simple story that's more about the dread-soaked, waterlogged atmosphere of a crumbling urban apartment block in the constant rain, and the generational trauma of several sets of mothers and daughters, as well as systemic sexism in Japanese society, and it all ends in a supernaturally induced tragedy. A nice, creepy little ghost story, even if there's not much to actually unravel in the central mystery, but a few scenes are wonderfully fucked up, like the elevator bait and switch near the end.
In the middle of a divorce, Yoshimi looks for an apartment for her and her daughter Ikuko. She ends up in an old, run-down building and enrolls her daughter at a nearby kindergarden while she looks for a job, and they're continuously bothered by noises from the neighbors upstairs, as well as a water leak in the ceiling that seems to only get worse. As Yoshimi tries to manage her time between taking care of her daughter, her new job, the divorce mediations, and various strange goings on in the building, including a red shoulder bag that keeps showing up despite all attempts to get rid of it, she thinks back on her own childhood, when she was largely neglected by her mother. The plot thickens as she discovers a young girl who went mysteriously missing a year earlier was carrying a red bag, lived in the same building, went to Ikuko's kindergarden, and was abandoned by her mother. Is there a ghost in the building that's after her daughter?
This is a quite nice 4k remaster, with moderate grain and decent color. I slightly improved black levels, which were a little elevated, but otherwise, all good. 5.1 track sounds fine, the English dub is... there. No commentary track or anything.
