Note : Lamberto Bava's career was, shall we say, a bit more varied than his father's, and this definitely not one of his best. Originally conceived as a vehicle for Edwige Fenech, but retooled to star Serena Grandi, who had just been in a Tinto Brass movie which made her a sex symbol, and a work for hire for Bava, this is essentially Sexualized Violence: The Movie, with a paper thin giallo plot that only serves as an excuse to show an enormous amount of tits (and some ass). Apart from the extremely copious nudity, a lot of it of course by the very voluptuous Grandi, there's mostly two things vaguely interesting about it: On one hand, it has a kind of original gimmick where we see the victims from the killer's point of view, and he sees them as strange freakish creatures with, say, a giant eyeball for a head, and the eyeball is smoking a cigarette, which is at least something I hadn't seen before. Secondly, the cinematography, by Gialorenzo Battaglia, who also shot several of Lamberto's better films, like A Blade in the Dark, Demons, Demons 2, as well as a lot of trashy 80s cinema, is very pretty, with colored gels, beautiful bokeh, and nice framing. The rest of the generally at least moderately competent cast includes a few old familiars like George Eastman, Daria Nicolodi, and Karl Zinny, as well as David Brandon, Trine Michelsen, and pop singer/model/actress Sabrina Salerno.
Gioia is a former model who runs a men's magazine named Pussycat, which she inherited from her late husband, and where her brother Tony, a photographer, works with her. She has a nice house, but is often bothered by obscene phone calls from her neighbor Mark, who's in a wheelchair and passes his time looking at her through a telescope. One night, her friend Kim is murdered with a pitchfork when leaving her house. Creepy Mark witnesses the murder and calls Gioia, but she sees nothing outside, and doesn't believe him until the killer sends her photos of Kim's dead body, posed in front of a large photograph of Gioia. When Kim's body is found in a dumpster, the notoriety makes the magazine's sales soar. Tony does a photoshoot with Sabrina Salerno, and later they try to have sex, but Tony is impotent. After he leaves, the killer arrives in a beekeeper's suit, and releases bees in her apartment, which are attracted to her perfume, and sting her to death. Again the killer sends photos to Gioia, who recognizes the photo of her in the background. However, Roberto, the photographer who took it swears he knows nothing, and that the negatives were stolen. As Gioia contemplates selling the magazine to try to stop the murders, more people around her turn up dead, and the police might not have the right main suspect.
The image in this 4k restoration is very nice, with great, filmic color, nice skin tones you'll see a lot of, oh, how they glisten, good contrast and detail, and tight, fairly present grain. The sound, however, is a different story, with the Italian track sounding like it's had some aggressive noise reduction applied, which cuts in and out with the dialogue, and the English dub sounding very boxy. The commentary track is quite good, with a good summary of the problematic production of this film, as well as its context.
