Athanasios, long revered as a saint by the Orthodox Church, was patriarch of Constantinople from 1289 to 1293 and again from 1303 to 1309. He was a passionate ascetic, a puritanical reformer and a thaumaturge even in his own lifetime. In 1975 Alice-Mary Talbot published the definitive edition of his correspondence. In the course of her research she unearthed the only manuscript of an oration on his posthumous miracles composed by Theoktistos, a monk of the Stoudios monastery in Constantinople, who also wrote one version of the saint’s Vita, an encomium, a synaxarion and canons in his honour. The oration (or Logos) purports to be about the translation of the relics of Athanasios, but most of it is a record of the miracles of healing which those relics performed after the event. It is a fascinating document and its editor has presented it in a meticulously scholarly edition of the Greek text with a reliable translation and an informative introduction and commentary. A valuable section of the introduction deals with the process of canonisation in Byzantium, a subject which has been but little explored. Theoktistos was evidently an educated monk able to quote or misquote Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, Aristotle, Plutarch and other ancient writers while characteristically disapproving of their pagan sentiments; and he had no qualms about lifdng whole passages from earlier Christian hagiographers. But his account of the miracles effected by the relics of his hero is in some ways unique. He records the case histories of 39 sufferers from mental or physical disease or disability who were successfully cured. Twenty-one men and 18 women had the faith to visit the saint’s tomb or to anoint themselves with oil from his lamp or to drink water sanctified by contact with his relics. Two of the patients were cured by burninga fragment of the saint’s clothing and inhaling the fumes - a form of therapy for which there seems to be no precedent or parallel. The relics continued to work their miracles even after their removal from Constantinople to Venice in 1455 where, until 1973, they were mistakenly venerated as the remains of that greater saint, Athanasios of Alexandria. The Bollandists, who pointedly omitted the fourteenth-century Athanasios from the Acta Sanctorum as a schismatic, reported at miracles performed in Venice after his remains had acquired their new and mistaken identity.
