Note : A brainy British modernist take on the giallo, set in Italy, and starring some of the greatest actors of their generation, this supernatural thriller is unsettling, complex, and not without some weird tics. I didn't like this when I first saw it many years ago, but watching it again, I've come to realize it's great, an unsettling, paranoid trip through wintery Venice. Symbolism abounds, in the constant distorted reflections and bright red objects invading the frame, and the impressionist editing is a bit impenetrable, but definitely adds to the off-kilter mood. Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie are both fantastic, and it's pretty much a masterpiece all the way through.
After the accidental drowning death of their daughter, John and Laura Baxter are in Venice where John is working on restoring a crumbling church. They run into a pair of elderly British sisters who are touring the city, one of whom is blind but claims to have visions, and describes the Baxters' daughter in her red raincoat sitting between them at a restaurant. John is highly skeptical, while Laura finds solace in the possibility of the supernatural and wants to know more. While a serial killer stalks Venice, the blind woman raises the possibility that John also has second sight, and that he's in grave danger if he doesn't leave the city...
This Studio Canal 4k remaster looks pretty great, with nice color and contrast (perhaps a bit too aggressive in the blacks at times), well managed grain, and good detail. Stereo track is also good, and the director's commentary track is well worth listening to.
