He is considered one of the greatest Italian rockers, a genre he has often combined with blues and folk. He was the first Italian singer to fill the Milanese San Siro stadium with more than sixty thousand people, on July 19, 1980; and the first Italian singer to perform, in 1976, at the Montreux Jazz Festival (the previous year the first Italian group, the Agorà, had performed.
Among other firsts, Edoardo Bennato also has that of being the first artist to have released two albums only 15 days apart, in March 1980, Uffà! Ugh! and Sono solo canzonette (twelve years later Bruce Springsteen will carry out the same operation with the two albums Human Touch and Lucky Town), and that of having been, in 1974, the first Italian singer to be labeled by punk journalists.
Guitarist, harmonica player and singer, after a London experience he began to propose himself as an orchestra man playing at the same time, in addition to the guitar and the harmonica, also tambourines, kazoo and other percussions. The influence of rock greats (Dylan above all) and pop music immediately characterized his character and his music, in which, however, Mediterranean and Neapolitan influences could not be missing.
Among the other authors who inspired the work, we should also mention Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Jimmy "Hammond" Smith, Paul Anka and Neil Sedaka. His lyrics are often ironic and irreverent and bitingly turned against power, at any level and in any form it manifests.
