Amazon Reviewer:
Locals consider Elis Regina the most gifted Brazilian singer ever. She died too soon, in 1980. Tom Jobim is one of the creators of Bossa Nova and the conductor that made the genre famous worldwide. This combination alone would make this CD remarkable. But there's more. A lot more.
Elis was in her top shape in 1974 when the CD was recorded. The arrangements are subtle, delicate. Jobim's piano is sublime here. The recording is flawless, the textures, the tones, everything is crisp and present. Many takes are FIRST TAKES. The emotion was captured raw and sincere, very few overdubs were done.
A rare gem.
If you go to a Brazilian's home and browse through his/her CD collection, chances are this CD will be there. If you ask a musician from that country what are the top 10 albums ever, chances are this will be listed.
If you have to own ONE Brazilian CD, this should be it.
About the DVD-Audio Release from the Trama Catalog:
A chat about back catalogues between João Marcello Bôscoli (president of Trama) and the artistic vice-president of Universal, Max Pierre, led to the idea of mixing the classic "Elis & Tom" in stereo and 5.1 surround.
During three months, Cesar Camargo Mariano, who co-produced, played piano and did most of the arrangements on the original 1974 recordings (and who was also married to Elis at the time), ensconced himself in the Trama studios alongside sound engineer Luis Paulo Serafim.
Cesar's first concern was to change nothing of the original recording. He created a map with the positions of the instruments during the recording at the MGM studios in Los Angeles. The new version of Elis & Tom (Special Edition) came out on Trama Records in 2004.
This is a lovely surround mix that somehow manages to be active and discrete, yet at the same time natural sounding -- not artificial at all. It really feels as though you are encircled by the musicians and singers. It's very lifelike and overall a sonically gorgeous presentation. The music, of course, is awesome. One of the true classics not only of Bossa Nova, but of any genre one cares to name.
A test-burn on a Verbatim DVD+RW disc with ImgBurn worked fine on a standalone DVD-Audio player.
Disc was ripped with DVDFab Platinum 5.1.1.0 in "Clone" mode.
Enjoy :)
