First released on vinyl in 1957 as Elvis’ fourth album for RCA, Elvis’ Christmas Album contained 8 Christmas songs and 4 spirituals and spent 4 weeks at #1 on the charts. Incredibly, Elvis’ version of White Christmas caused a bit of controversy. The song’s composer, Irving Berlin, became offended at what he considered to be a mocking parody of his standard. In fact Elvis was only imitating The Drifter’s delivery of the song which attracted no such controversy because it was only played on “black” radio stations. Berlin’s staff phoned radio stations across the country with demands that Elvis’ version be boycotted. It wasn’t.
Elvis’ Christmas Album eventually sold over 3 millions copies.
