Philo Beddoe (Clint Eastwood) is een simpele truckchauffeur die regelmatig wat bijverdient door hier en daar wat te knokken. Hij woont samen met een vriend, Orville Boggs (Geoffrey Lewis), de moeder van Orville en een orang-oetang Clyde, die hij met een weddenschap gewonnen heeft. Op een dag komt hij een vrouw tegen die meer voor Philo betekent dat de vrouwen die hij hiervoor tegenkwam. Deze vrouw, Lynn Halsey-Taylor (Sondra Locke) gaat er echter vandoor wanneer ze merkt dat Philo te serieus wordt. Deze laat het hier niet bij zitten en gaat samen met Orville en Clyde in de achtervolging. Philo en Orville worden op hun beurt weer achterna gezeten door een groep motorrijders waarmee Philo eerder mee in de clinch lag.
Philo Beddoe is an easy-going trucker and a great fist-fighter. With two friends - Orville, who promotes prize-fights for him, and Clyde, the orangutan he won on a bet - he roams the San Fernando Valley in search of cold beer, country music and the occasional punch-up. But he is floored himself by a dainty little country and western singer, who gives him the slip when she realizes he's getting too serious. Phil, Clyde and Orville set off in pursuit, pestered by bikers.
Philo Beddoe is your regular, easygoing, truck-driving guy. He's also the best bar-room brawler west of the Rockies. And he lives with a 165-pound orangutan named Clyde. Like other guys, Philo finally falls in love - with a flighty singer who leads him on a screwball chase across the American Southwest. Nothing's in the way except a motorcycle gang, and legendary brawler Tank Murdock.
