Note : I don't usually do films quite this recent, but this is a good one, a creepy Korean folk horror which isn't super scary, but very moody, with some great imagery, and lots of ties into Korean folklore and history, and some very good performances from Choi Min-sik, who you may remember from Oldboy and I Saw the Devil, two films I should really get around to soon, Kim Go-eun, Yoo Hae-jin, Lee Do-hyun, and Kim Jae-cheol. The story template, about people who are very good at what they do being assembled into a team at the behest of a rich client, but who get in over their heads, isn't super original, but there are so many interesting things going on here that I've never seen in a horror movie. It might just be that it seems exotic, but this film was apparently a big hit in Korea too. If you liked The Wailing, which I really loved, you'll probably like this, although this is more subtle (no zombies, I'm afraid).
A famous Korean shaman, Hwa-rim, and her understudy Bong-gil, are hired by a very wealthy client from a Korean-American family, to figure out what's wrong with his infant son, who doctors have been unable to help, and whose ailment seems to be supernatural in origin. Hwa-rim determines the problem to be a curse by spirit of an ancestor, and the client asks them to relocate the grave of his grandfather to appease the spirit. Hwa-rim enlists Sang-deok, an elderly feng shui master, and Yeong-geun, a pragmatic undertaker, to help. However, Sang-deok wants to back out when he sees the remote location of the grave, sensing a sinister energy, but when the client doubles his pay, he reluctantly agrees. They perform a complex ritual as the grave is opened, and everything seems to proceed smoothly, until one of the workers runs into a bad omen, and things start going wrong, especially after the coffin is accidentally opened. With much effort and the loss of several lives, they manage to stop the spirit and save the infant, but a few months later, things again start happening that indicate the supernatural problems surrounding the gravesite are not all resolved after all...
This is something of a first for me, my own hybrid encode. Video and Korean audio is from the Hong Kong Edko release, which has a much higher bitrate than the other releases floating around. The English 5.1 dub and some additional subtitles are from a hybrid remux of the UHD disc, which incorporated subtitles from several sources including iTunes, and a couple of subtitles are also from a hybrid remux of the Splendid Films release, all of these were converted from 23.976 fps to 24.000 fps to match the video source. Anyway, the image looks great, with moody, super dark cinematography, both sound tracks sound good too (but don't watch it with the dub, really), and there's plenty of subs. Too bad there isn't a commentary track or anything, I'd love to get more background on this film.
