Frankenhooker (1990), directed by Frank Henenlotter, Synapse remaster with black level correction, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 5.1 remaster, original theatrical stereo, two commentary tracks, and English SDH subtitles.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099611/
Video encoded in two-pass 9 500 kbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image.
English SDH subtitles OCRed, proofed and corrected.
Note : It feels like Henenlotter's previous films built up to this orgy of absurd body horror, where sex, drugs, mutilation, mad science and trepanation mix to create a modern retelling of the good old Frankenstein story, just with more exploding hookers. New Jersey science hobbyist Jeffrey Franken's girlfriend (played by Penthouse Pet Patty Mullen) is killed in a tragic lawn mower accident, but he manages to preserve her head, and now he just needs the right body to put it on. The red light district of Manhattan serves as the perfect meat market, but there are complications with a pimp, "supercrack" that makes hookers explode into body parts, and his beloved Elizabeth coming back from the dead with her personality a little changed, as a hooker who tends to electrocute her johns.
Henenlotter briefly changes his beloved grimy NYC for the suburbs of New Jersey, making for a nice contrast when he returns to NYC later. Compared to his previous films, the effects are better here, there's copious nudity, the story is more coherent, the acting is far better, and abusive pimps get their comeuppance. Just watch it. It's everything you ever wanted and more. Oh, and Bill Murray apparently said "If you see one movie this year, it should be Frankenhooker."
This encode has something a little special. There are basically two decent BluRay releases of this film, Arrow and Synapse. Synapse has more detail and is sharper, but has quite elevated black levels, making the image look washed out and the colors desaturated. So for this, I've carefully readjusted the black levels in the Synapse release, compressing, but not clipping, the very lowest range of the image, so that blacks are better, saturation improved, and as a bonus, there's a little less noise in shadows. This was all done in a fully 10-bit pipeline to maintain maximum quality without banding. Otherwise, the two commentary tracks are both great, funny and informative, the 5.1 remaster is excellent, and after the adjustment to the image, I think this is about the best this movie can be.
