My DVD rips are always taken DIRECTLY from the actual DVDs, not re-encodings of an earlier h264 torrent, and not "filled in" with web downloads. HEVC is a superb machine, but it should be given quality raw materials.
This is the complete TV series From The Earth To The Moon, the story of the Apollo lunar missions and the men and women at the centre of the program.

Taken directly from my PAL DVD, I used x265 to create high quality HEVC videos of all 12 episodes. Most were done as two pass, with an average bitrate of 800 kbps, but I had to use a CRF for episode two, with lots of dark scenes. The aspect ratio is set to 16:9, so the 720 x 576 pixel videos appear to be 1024 x 576.
The DVD quality is of course not up to today's standards, but in the absence of a blu-ray of the series, it's the best we have.
I decided to not attempt to shrink or in any way re-encode the audio - it's the 5.1 AC3 as encoded on the DVD.
