Note : It's fair to say giallo was in decline in the late 70s and early 80s, overshadowed by gorier slashers and hard-nosed cops, not to mention explicit sex, but Mario Landi decided to have a go at making a giallo as sleazy, gory, porny, and extreme as possible, and the result is this entertaining mess. It stars Jeff Blynn as a police comissioner who looks like he's really into yacht rock, and keeps hard boiled eggs in his pockets to snack on at all times (possibly a Columbo reference, or did the filmmakers misunderstand what "hardboiled thriller" means?) There's also Mariangela Giordano, who you might remember as incest mom from Burial Ground, and whose presence is always a seal of quality, as well as a guarantee she's going to get naked a lot. But the stars of the show are the sex and rape, of which there is a stunning amount, and the violence, less frequent, but extremely gory. It's not a good film by any means, but if you're in for some gory, sleazy sexploitation nonsense, or just enjoy seeing a man subsist on a diet of pure hardboiled eggs, this is for you. The rest of the cast includes Gianni Dei as the pervert, Leonora Fani as his wife, Michele Renzullo, Eolo Capritti, Vassili Karis, and Giancarlo Del Duca.
A young couple is found dead by a Venice canal, he's been stabbed and has cocaine in his pocket, she's drowned, but is not in the water. Comissioner De Pol, egg lover and owner of an impressive mustache and even more impressive hair, is called in to investigate, and starts working on unraveling the mystery while eating eggs. The autopsy shows the woman had sexual intercourse shortly before dying, and when he questions Marzia, a friend of hers, it turns out the man was a huge pervert who enjoyed involving his wife in all sorts of depraved sexual practices. However, there's also the matter of the drugs, so cops tap Marzia's phone and search her house, turning up photographs of an orgy between Marzia, the two dead people, a known drug dealer, and a prostitute. A young man in sunglasses is following Marzia, and later tracks down the prostitute from the photos, killing her by stabbing her in the crotch with scissors repeatedly. As police trace the story of the dead couple, the murderer gets closer and closer to Marzia, but who is he and what does he want? Turns out, he likes burning people alive and sawing off limbs almost as much as De Pol likes having sulfurous egg sweats. Who will win?
Not a good remaster by any means, fairly dirty, although color and contrast are ok, image is reasonably stable, and there's as much detail as you can probably get out of a telecine like this. Stereo track sounds similarly reasonable, and the commentary track is by Troy Howarth, who definitely knows his stuff, but seems slightly exasperated with this whole affair.
