Note : Some lesser-known Japanese sci-fi here, on the fringes of what might reasonably be called cyberpunk, and it's kind of a mixed bag, with a confusing, flimsy plot about humanity fighting back against some sort of rogue supercomputer, and the performances are definitely uneven, but man, the aesthetics. It's got a distinct James Cameron by way of anime vibe, beautiful practical and miniature effects work, cool mechanical and art design, and costuming that mixes mecha with World War II details. I'd suggest settling in and watching it on a big screen to just let it all wash over you.
An element named Texmexium (presumably enriched from burrito ore) enables a new generation of supercomputers, including the AI Kyron-5, which was created to run a robotics facility on an island off Asia, but, as so often happens in the frenzied imaginations of screenwriters, the artificial intelligences rebel! The war between humanity and the machines reaches a detente, and some 30 years later, a group of scavengers land on the island to recover computer parts. Several of them are swiftly killed off by still-active defense systems, and they run into an injured soldier, who's hunting a droid that stole a vial of Texmexium. As they run into the dreaded Aerobot, an autonomous war plane, they discover the remains of a GUNHED, a sort of advanced mech, and manage to put it back together enough to fight back against the supercomputer. Or something. It sure looks cool, though.
This is an above-average remaster all in all, although it's a telecine transfer, with moderate grain, ok detail, and fine contrast and color. Note that there's some English dialogue which has burned-in Japanese subs. The Dolby Surround track sounds good too.
