Note : Hammer wasn't the only British studio developing horror in the late 50s, and this psychological horror/police procedural is an excellent example of the seedy, sadistic output of Anglo-Amalgamated Productions, also known for the excellent Peeping Tom, and for co-producing some of Corman's Poe adaptations. The inimitable Michael Gough is in the lead as a crime journalist with possible ulterior motives, and the various inventive kills are apparently inspired by cases from Scotland Yard's infamous Black Museum. Remaining cast includes June Cunningham, Graham Curnow, Shirley Anne Field, and Geoffrey Keen.
A woman receives a package in the mail, and upon trying the binoculars contained within, is stabbed to death through the eyes by spring-loaded metal spikes. As the police investigates, they're visited by crime journalist Bancroft, who takes an interest in the case, and is informed the binoculars are similar to ones found in Scotland Yard's Black Museum. It turns out Bancroft collects gruesome murder memorabilia in a secret basement museum, helped by his assistant Rick. Soon after, Bancroft's provocative mistress, Joan, is murdered in her flat by an improvised guillotine mounted above her bed, and a hideously disfigured man is seen leaving the scene. A young man is soon arrested, but is revealed to be a fantasist, and the murders continue, while Rick confesses to his fiancée that Bancroft has been hypnotizing him. Things come to a head as Rick and Bancroft's roles in the killing spree is finally revealed.
This remaster looks fine, I could have wished for more detail and clarity, but the 50s color palette is nicely preserved, if perhaps a bit over-saturated, and the contrast is good. Stereo track sounds fine, commentary is quite interesting.
