Nell'anno 2030 Ted Mosby, un affermato architetto, fa sedere i suoi due figli adolescenti sul divano di casa, e inizia a raccontare loro gli eventi che, venticinque anni prima, lo hanno portato a conoscere quella che sarebbe diventata la sua futura moglie e loro madre.
Ted inizia così a ricordare di quando, nel 2005, era soltanto un giovane ragazzo a New York, single e ancora all'inizio della sua carriera, ma quasi ossessionato dal matrimonio e dalla ricerca della ragazza da sposare. Ted viveva assieme ai suoi storici amici Marshall Eriksen e Lily Aldrin, una giovane coppia di innamorati, fidanzati dai tempi del college. La loro combriccola era completata da Barney Stinson, un ricco e impenitente donnaiolo conosciuto per caso, dalla battuta pronta e sempre a caccia del divertimento più assoluto. Ted inizia a raccontare la storia a partire dal giorno in cui ha conosciuto Robin Scherbatsky, una ragazza canadese appena arrivata in città, reporter in una piccola emittente televisiva locale, che presto si unisce al gruppo d'amici e con la quale il giovane instaura un complicato rapporto di amicizia/amore. The series revolves around Ted Mosby (played by Radnor, voiced by Saget) narrating the story of how he met Tracy McConnell (Milioti) mother to his children. While living in New York City and working as an architect, the narrative deals with his best friends, including the long-lasting couple Marshall Eriksen (Segel) and Lily Aldrin (Hannigan); the eccentric, womanizer-playboy Barney Stinson (Harris); and news anchor Robin Scherbatsky (Smulders). The series explores many storylines, including a love triangle between Robin, Ted, and Barney; Marshall and Lily's relationship; as well as the careers of the characters.

The year is 2030. Ted Mosby is relaying the story of how he met his wife to his daughter and son. The story starts in the year 2005, when then twenty-seven year old architect Ted was spurred on to want to get married after his best friends from his college days at Wesleyan, lawyer Marshall Eriksen, who was his roommate at the time and kindergarten teacher Lily Aldrin, got engaged after nine years of dating each other. Ted's new quest in life was much to the dismay of his womanizing friend, Barney Stinson. But soon after Marshall and Lily's engagement, Ted believed that his life mate was going to be news reporter and aspiring news anchor Robin Scherbatsky, who, despite having had a romantic relationship with her after this time, ended up being who the kids know as their "Aunt" Robin. As Ted relays the story to his kids, the constants are that their Uncle Marshall, Aunt Lily, Uncle Barney and Aunt Robin are always in the picture and thus have something to do with how he got together with their mother.

With only a half-hour to go, both Barney and Robin have panic attacks about their upcoming nuptials. Meanwhile, Marshall and Lily rewrite their old wedding vows.
Gary Blauman shows up at Barney and Robin's wedding, sending the gang into a frenzy about which table to seat him at. Through their debate, they realize each of them either hates or loves Gary. Meanwhile, in the year 2014, Ted and The Mother go out on their first date.
Marshall enlists Ted and Barney to help him figure out where Lily went when she left in the middle of their fight.
