La carismatica Annalise Keating, stimato avvocato e docente di diritto penale, insegna presso una prestigiosa università di Filadelfia, la Middleton University. Con la collaborazione di Wes Gibbins, Laurel Castillo, Michaela Pratt, Connor Walsh e Asher Millstone, i cosiddetti «Keating Five», ovvero cinque studenti scelti per assisterla nei casi giudiziari, e dei suoi associati Bonnie e Frank, Annalise si ritrova a dover affrontare vari processi. Particolarmente rilevante è il caso di omicidio della studentessa Lila Stangard, in realtà coinvolta in una relazione con il marito di Annalise, Sam Keating. Quest'ultimo, tentando di attaccare Rebecca, migliore amica della ragazza uccisa ma anche principale sospettata dell'omicidio, viene ucciso da Wes Gibbins. Questo, con l'aiuto degli altri quattro studenti presenti al momento dell'uccisione e della stessa Annalise, provvede a nascondere il corpo e coprire il delitto. Successivamente, Rebecca viene uccisa da Bonnie, per paura che confessi la verità sull'omicidio di Sam e metta nei guai Annalise e l'intero studio. Il vero assassino di Lila Stangard è Frank, mandato da Sam perché gli doveva un favore.
