Note : It's sometimes kind of hard to define what is and isn't an exploitation movie, the line gets fuzzy around the edges, but that's not really a problem here. This 1970s hippiesploitation film is what the term "exploitation" was created to describe. It features a group of Manson-family inspired, drug-crazed devil-worshiping hippies who get infected with rabies and go berserk in a small town, complete with wanton rape and murder, self-immolation, decapitation and dismemberment, and construction worker sex orgies. The quality of the acting varies wildly, although some of the strongest is from Bhaskar Roy Chowdhury as the hippie cult leader, who's actually pretty great, and it also features Lynn Lowry, of "The Crazies", "Shivers", and "Cat People" fame. Rumor has it this was the first film to be rated X because of violence rather than sexual content, and it's an essential exploitation film.

A group of Satan-worshiping hippies holding a ceremony in the woods are surprised to see Sylvia, a girl from a nearby town who it turns out one of the group has befriended. They rape and abuse her, and when she returns to her family, her friend Mildred seeks help from her boyfriend Roger, who leads a construction crew building a dam that will soon flood the now nearly deserted town. In the meantime, the hippies' van breaks down, forcing them to stay in an abandoned hotel in town, and they start buying food from Mildred, who runs the local bakery. Suzy's grandfather heads over to confront the hippies, but they beat him and feed him LSD, and he returns home with the help of Suzy's little brother Pete, who takes his grandfather's shotgun to go back to get revenge, but on the way runs into and kills a rabid dog. The next day, Pete drains blood from the dog and injects it into meat pies at Mildred's bakery, which he then sells to the hippies at a discount. However, the rabies-infected hippies go berserk, and one of them infects all the construction workers in an impromptu orgy, leading to the town being beset by a horde of rabies zombies.

This film never looked great, but this transfer is pretty decent, not very clean, but fine in terms of color and contrast. Mono track sounds fine, the two commentary tracks are amusing. Note that the subtitles don't cover the dialog in the extra scenes that make this the director's cut, but it hardly matters. As an aside, whoever thought a movie lasting less than an hour and a half needed fifty chapters probably also had rabies.
