Arthur e César sono amici da quando entrambi frequentavano controvoglia lo stesso severissimo collegio. Ma non potrebbero essere più diversi: Arthur è un ricercatore medico puntiglioso e ossessionato dal rispetto delle regole; César è un guascone imprudente e trasgressivo che è appena stato sfrattato da casa sua in seguito alla propria bancarotta. E se Arthur, divorziato con figlia, sta ancora aspettando pazientemente che l'ex moglie torni a casa, César colleziona avventure senza legarsi a nessuna. Per un equivoco, Arthur viene a conoscenza della gravissima condizione medica di César, e César si convince che sia Arthur a trovarsi in punto di morte. Da quel momento i due faranno a gara per realizzare i desideri finali l'uno dell'altro, anche quelli più lontani dal proprio gusto personale: il che ha il vantaggio di sbloccare lo stallo esistenziale in cui si trovavano entrambi.
