Quote:
Cult author and icon of the beat generation Jack Kerouac is probably lesser known for his musical excursions than his writings. This disc, released back in 1959, is a revelation. It might best be referred to as spoken word, but Kerouac's choice of collaborators, the talented tenor saxmen Al Cohn and Zoot Sims (with Cohn doubling up on piano at times) is truly inspired and pairs wonderfully with the words themselves. It's clear that Kerouac knows exactly why he's marrying the words against the very specific musical backdrops and the result is unpretentious and engaging throughout. A desolate picture of a bygone age this is as enjoyable as history as it is music, and should be listened to with the utmost care and attention.
