Note : This low-budget supernatural slasher became a sleeper hit in 2001, but then got a lot of less desirable attention when everyone noticed that the director was a fucking convicted child molester. Francis Ford Coppola, whose American Zoetrope partially bankrolled this film, has stood by Salva for who knows what reason, but in the interest of separating the art from the artist, here it is, for your enjoyment without any money going into Salva's pockets. And it's honestly not bad, a tense, weird nightmare that gets progressively darker and weirder, although it depends on the viewer whether the gradual reveals are scary or a bit silly. Still, much like the director, the Creeper proved an enduring monster, spawning a couple of sequels (which we might get to). Most critics agree the first part of the film is better than the last, and I tend to agree, with some surreal, nightmarish imagery, sweaty rural southern locale, and tense setups. The pretty good cast includes Gina Philips, Justin Long, Jonathan Breck, Patricia Belcher, and Eileen Brennan.
Two siblings are driving home from college for spring break, passing through rural Florida. An old, rusty, scary looking truck tailgates them on a deserted stretch of road, then eventually passes them and moves on. The two discuss a story about disappearances and murders in the area, before spotting the same truck as earlier parked next to an abandoned church, and the driver dumping bundled wrapped in bloody sheets into a chute. The driver notices them, gives chase, and forces them off the road, but then drives off, and they decide to go back to investigate. They find the church basement filled with corpses, including a number of them stitched together, preserved, and covering the walls and ceiling. As they attempt to call the police, they're contacted by a mysterious woman who tells them they're in grave danger, and mentions the song "Jeepers Creepers". As they struggle to convince the police, the truck driver breaks into their car and goes through their things, which finally gets the cops to wake up and accompany them back to the church, however, the man in the truck is more than just a man, and both the siblings and the police are getting a lot more than they bargained for.
This is a pretty decent transfer, I think probably a 2k scan, with good color and contrast, nice filmic grain, and it's pretty clean too, although it's not very clear and sharp, and can get a little murky in the dark scenes, but all in all, a very watchable version. The 5.1 track sounds good, and the two commentary tracks are, I suppose, interesting and informative, if you can stomach listening to Victor Salva for several hours.
