Johnny Rawls - Best of Johnny Rawls, Vol. 1 (2021) [gnodde]
Johnny Rawls (born September 10, 1951) is an American soul blues singer, guitarist, arranger, songwriter and record producer. He was influenced by the deep soul music of the 1960s, as performed by O. V. Wright, James Carr, and Z. Z. Hill, although his styling, production and lyrics are more contemporary in nature.
To date, Rawls has released more than fifteen albums under his name. He has been nominated many times for a Blues Music Award, and at the 40th Blues Music Awards ceremony, Rawls' album, I'm Still Around, was named as the 'Soul Blues Album of the Year'.
The fourteen songs were selected from the nine albums Johnny Rawls has recorded on Catfood Records. In his over fifty year career, he has won multiple Blues Music Awards and Living Blues Awards. Three of his albums have made the Downbeat Magazine Critics' Best of the Year List. His albums have topped the Roots Music Report Soul chart. Three time Grammy winner Jim Gaines was the producer for all but two tracks and Johnny was backed by his stellar studio group, The Rays, on all but one track. He is joined by Blues Hall of Fame member, Otis Clay, on two songs.
If you’re a fan of soul-blues, this collection is a must-have. And if you’ve been living in a cave for the past 40 years and weren’t aware of Johnny Rawls before, this is a sensational place to start. Strongly recommended.
