Johnny Winter - Roots (2011)
Johnny Winter pays homage to his early influences with his latest studio effort “Roots,” which features an all-star cast of guest artists including:Derek Trucks, Vince Gill, Jimmy Vivino and Susan Tedeschi.
Released Sept 27 (09/27/11) the iconic albino bluesman’s newest outing finds him in fine form both musically and vocally, taking inspiration from his source material and from the host of top notch players joining him in the studio.
“Roots” opens with Winter putting his personal stamp on the 1940’s classic “T-Bone Shuffle,” featuring the blues legend’s trademark vocal wail and some trade off riffing with longtime Jimmy Buffet slide guitarist Sonny Landreth.
On the 1957 Bobby “Blue” Bland staple “Further on up the Road,” the Texas axeman gets soulful with the help of Conan O’Brien’s bandleader, guitarist Jimmy Vivino.
Winter’s growling cover of Elmore Jame’s “Done Somebody Wrong” teams him with longtime Allman Brother Band guitarist Warren Haynes.
Other standout tracks include Winter’s interpretation of Chuck Berry’s “Maybelline,” that features some fine country picking from Vince Gill; Jimmy Reed’s “Bright Lights, Big City” which has Winter sharing lead vocals with Susan Tedeschi; Robert Johnson’s “Dust My Broom” that highlights the blue icon’s snarling vocals, while trading sizzling slide guitar riffs with Derek Trucks, and John Lee Hooker’s slow blues standard “Come Back Baby” which partners Johnny with jazz keyboard great John Medeski.
Strong musical contributions are also made by Blues Traveler’s John Popper, Johnny’s brother Edgar Winter, The Kingbees’ Frank Latorre, and Winter’s producer Paul Nelson.
