Ted Kramer, agente pubblicitario, torna a casa tutto contento per una promozione ricevuta e non trova più la moglie. Trova il piccolo Billy, ma non Joanna che ha deciso di divorziare. Da quel momento tutto gli va storto: non riesce a impedire che Billy subisca un incidente nel quale rischia un occhio e trascura il lavoro fino a perdere il posto. La débacle professionale, derivata anche dalla volontà di Ted di stare più vicino a Billy, è addirittura considerata dai giudici un motivo di demerito nella causa che presto oppone i due coniugi nella contesa sul bambino. Il tribunale infatti finisce con l'affidare la custodia di Billy alla madre. La vicenda però non è conclusa e la donna, passato il motivo di risentimento che l'aveva spinta alla scelta di abbandonare il marito, capisce che per il bene del piccolo è preferibile trovare un "modus vivendi" che tenga conto soprattutto delle esigenze di Billy.
