There is really nothing to do in the Vigata police station. Catarella hopelessly engages in the solution of crosswords and riddles and Montalbano reads a novel by Simenon, when he is unexpectedly forced to play the part a la Bruce Willis in an American film. In fact, in an old palace inhabited by two bigoted elderly people, the brothers Gregorio and Caterina Palmisano, whose religious manias have now reached the height of madness, the hallucinated old man started shooting from the window; Montalbano, in defiance of his feeling by now old, by climbing dangerously up a firefighters ladder manages to render the old madman harmless. In the dilapidated building, in a forest of crucifixes of every kind illuminated by countless candles, Montalbano believes he has discovered a young woman who was killed, but realizes that it is a worn out inflatable doll, now battered by prolonged use, without an eye and with a hole. repaired at best. Once the two brothers have been hospitalized, inertia seems to have returned to the Vigata police station when news arrives of a corpse found in a dumpster: it is not the body of a victim, but of another doll identical to the one found in the Palmisano brothers' building. In those same days the inspector receives a strange anonymous letter in which he is challenged, with riddles in verse, to a treasure hunt which, out of curiosity and because he has nothing else to do, he accepts. After two or three clues, he suspects that the game is hiding something dangerous and crazy. Unfortunately, his "cop" flair does not deceive him.
