Ash Williams e la sua fidanzata Linda vanno in vacanza nei boschi, per soggiornare in una rustica casa di legno molto isolata. Mentre Linda si sta cambiando, Ash trova un sinistro libro, con la copertina in pelle umana e apparentemente scritto col sangue. Lo accompagna un magnetofono, in cui un certo professor Knowby, archeologo, ha registrato i suoi appunti riguardanti il ritrovamento del testo, la sua traduzione durante il soggiorno nei boschi con la moglie, e gli strani eventi che han fatto seguito alla lettura dei primi passaggi dell'opera. Questa si rivela una copia del famigerato Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, il "libro dei morti". La voce registrata ripete un'invocazione dal libro e così richiama una misteriosa e malefica presenza demoniaca...

Ash Williams and his girlfriend Linda go on vacation in the woods, to stay in a rustic wooden house very isolated. While Linda is being changed, Ash finds a sinister book, with the cover in human skin and apparently written in blood. He is accompanied by a tape, where a certain Professor Knowby, archaeologist, has recorded his notes concerning the discovery of the text, its translation during the stay in the woods with his wife, and the strange events that have made following the reading of the first steps the work. This proves to be a copy of the infamous Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, the "Book of the Dead." The recorded voice repeated invocation from the book and so attracts a mysterious and malevolent demonic presence ...
