Johnny Cahill, sceriffo in una cittadina a Nord di Durango, trascura, per troppa dedizione ai suoi doveri, i suoi figlioli, il piccolo Billy Joe e il diciassettenne Danny. Per ripicco, assente come al solito il genitore, i due si fanno coinvolgere nell'astuto piano di tre rapinatori, capeggiati dal vecchio Fraser, che, approfittando della confusione creata da un incendio, svaligiano una banca. Dopo aver arrestato, come responsabile del "colpo", quattro innocenti (che una frettolosa giuria condanna all'impiccagione), Cahill individua i veri colpevoli, ma attende, per arrestarli, che Billy e Danny comprendano da soli d'aver sbagliato.
