Il documentario segue la vicenda di Steven Avery: condannato per un crimine brutale e in seguito esonerato, Avery denunciò il sistema legale e la corruzione rampante al suo interno, ottenendo un risarcimento nell'ordine di milioni. Ma proprio durante questo procedimento legale, Avery si ritrova ad essere il primo sospettato per un altro crimine.
