* Marquis de Sade - Erotic Novels and Short Stories (19 books)
The MARQUIS DE SADE, byname of Donatien Alphonse François, Comte de Sade (1740 – 1814) , was a French aristocrat, revolutionary politician, philosopher and writer famous for his literary depictions of a libertine sexuality as well as numerous accusations of sex crimes. His works include novels, short stories, plays, dialogues, and political tracts. In his lifetime some of these were published under his own name while others, which Sade denied having written, appeared anonymously.
Despite having no legal charge brought against him, Sade was imprisoned or committed for about 32 years of his life, time divided between facilities such as the Château de Vincennes, the Bastille, and the Charenton asylum, where he died. He wrote many of his works during these periods of confinement.
Sade's erotic works combined philosophical discourse with pornography, depicting sexual fantasies with an emphasis on violence, suffering, sodomy, child rape, crime, and blasphemy against Christianity. Many of the characters in his works are teenagers or adolescents. His work is a depiction of extreme absolute freedom, unrestrained by morality, religion, or law.
Sade's most famous books include the novels THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM (1785); JUSTINE, OR THE MISFORTUNES OF VIRTUE (1791); PHILOSOPHY IN THE BEDROOM (1795); and JULIETTE (1799). His fictional portrayals of sexual violence and sadism stunned his contemporaries. Suffering is the primary rule, as in these novels one must often decide between sympathizing with the torturer or the victim.
THE CRIMES OF LOVE is the most complete selection from Sade's four-volume collection of short stories (1800). The compilation includes "An Essay on Novels," Sade's penetrating survey of the novelist's art. It also contains the preface to the collection and an important statement of Sade's concept of fiction and one of the few literary manifestos published during the French Revolution.
