Grief-stricken after the death of his partner Tammi Terrell, who died of cancer in March 1970, Marvin Gaye retired from the business, plunging into intense depression by jumping into football and signing for the Detroit Lions team.
In June of the same year, however, he returned to music driven by the social and political moment of his country. As the United States battles its own demons, both internal (the segregation of blacks) and external (the Vietnam War), Marvin releases a masterpiece of soul imbued with social conscience.
With his committed prose, What Going On, appearing on May 21, 1971, it takes Motown out of the Sweet American Dream to confront the reality of his time.
But Marvin Gaye, artist and poet, makes his political and social commitment feel like no other. A masterly and skillfully measured symphony where the instruments, the rhythm and the choirs are capable of hypnotizing the listener.
The milestone of American black music, however, was not easy to represent as Berry Gordy feared that this highly politicized work would damage that always very (perhaps too) positive image of the label and of his artist. With What’s Going On, Marvin forces Gordy to take sides on the Vietnamese conflict, interracial tensions and the degradation of American metropolises. The success of the album is immediate and What's Going On is widely rewarded.
For the first time, and especially for a Motown album, this record was designed differently, without Gordy's total control. Marvin Gaye then signs a new deal with Motown, this time for a million dollars, the most important for a black artist at the time. And as for What's Going On, it still remains one of the best albums of the twentieth century.
