Gimli Glider
Aired on 05/14/2008, Narrated by Jonathan Aris
On 23 July 1983, Air Canada Flight 143, a Boeing 767-200, runs out of fuel at 41,000 feet (12,500m) altitude, about halfway through its flight from Montreal to Edmonton. The crew is able to glide the aircraft safely to an emergency landing at Gimli Industrial Park Airport, a former RCAF airbase being used as a local dragstrip at Gimli, Manitoba. Afterwards, the aircraft was repaired and flown out, thereafter nicknamed the "Gimli Glider". After almost 25 years of service, the airplane flew its last revenue flight on January 1, 2008 and was retired to the Mojave Airport (KMHV) storage facility.
