Note : Here's an almost legendary cult horror film, from the creators of Howard the Duck, somehow. It's hard to describe, and at times frustratingly vague about the specifics of what's going on, but it has amazing atmosphere, a dream-like, surreal sense of overpowering dread that permeates everything, and it really works if you're in the right mindset, I think. If I had to compare it to something, I think Carnival of Souls is the closest point of reference, although this is more oblique, but with more explicit violence. Some have also claimed a Lovecraftian influence, and it's kind of there in the margins. If you want something slow-moving, strange, and nightmarish, this is for you. Also, fun fact, the guy in the prologue is famous filmmaker Walter hill.
Arletty drives to the small beach town of Point Dume to see her father, but finds his house abandoned, and his diary which talks about a darkness consuming the town, and which warns her not to look for him. After seeing her father's art dealer, who claims to never have sold any of his paintings, she runs into dandy aristocrat Thom and his two lovers Laura and Toni, as well as the town eccentric, who talks about "the blood moon" and "the dark stranger" that visited the town a hundred years ago, and will soon come again, and claims Arletty's father is "one of them" now. As Arletty keeps reading her father's journal, where he speaks about having a "condition", groups of pale people gather on the beach to look at the moon, and soon Laura is eaten by a group of meat-binging cannibals in a supermarket, and Toni is similarly consumed in a movie theater. It all can be traced back to a cannibal/vampire cult, and as the blood moon rises, the Messiah of Evil returns.
This remaster is quite good, from what seems to have been somewhat limited source material. It was a bit too grainy, so I applied some conservative reduction and encoded at a high bitrate. Original stereo sounds fine, both commentary tracks are interesting, maybe especially the one with Kim Newman and Stephen Thrower, who have a lot of fascinating insights.
