Mount & Blade:

Mount & Blade is a game that combines strategy with action-based combat and strong RPG elements. This is a debut project of an independent Turkish developer TaleWorlds.

Plot
The player assumes the role of an adventurer that arrives to the realm of Calradia, divided into several rivaling kingdoms. Such cumulation of independent nations sharing one land sparks regular conflicts and heated wars. As a result, the once mighty, prosperous Calradia, now after decades of inner struggle, stands on the verge of collapse. However, Mount & Blade does not offer a story campaign. Instead, it gives the player full freedom of shaping the adventures.

Mechanics
Mount & Blade combines elements of action game, RPG, and strategy. Gamepley is two-fold: you journey around the world in the map view, but when you enter towns and villages or fight battles, the game goes into TPP/FPP action view, in which you have direct control of your character. The party that fights along you in battles can be recruited from among villagers or hired mercenaries, whom you can find in city taverns.

Army management is an important aspect of Mount & Blade gameplay. You have to take care of logistics and finances, as well as decide whether to attack an enemy army at the moment or run away, thus saving your men’s lives. Unlike other games of the genre, combat in Mount & Blade is based on reflexes and timing. In order to make the game more realistic the developers did not include healing potions or anything of the kind. It takes just a couple of well-aimed strikes by an enemy sword to take you down, therefore an essential move in combat is blocking incoming strikes. Like in actual medieval combat, a horse rider has an advantage over a foot soldier. Besides, the game features equally realistic archery – you can even shoot from horseback.

Combat is the heart and soul of Mount & Blade, but the game does not end there. You can also talk to denizens of Calradia, trade with merchants in cities, or take various assignments. As you progress in the game, both your hero and his soldiers gain experience and learn new skills.

Technical aspects
Mount & Blade features 3D graphics, however, its quality and level of detail never was the game’s strength. The atmosphere of a medieval world is enhanced by apt music.

Mount & Blade: Warband:

Mount & Blade: Warband for PC, AND and etc. is a standalone expansion to an acknowledged game from TaleWorlds. The add-on was produced by the same team that worked on the original title.

The original Mount & Blade debuted in 2005. It is an interesting combination of strategy and RPG elements. What makes it unique is that you can directly take part in spectacular medieval battles. This time the developers wanted to expand and improve many features of their work while adding some crucial options like online battles. TaleWorlds introduced many new features based on the feedback from the players’ community.

Gameplay
Warband on PC, AND and etc. significantly improves artificial intelligence of lieges and commanders when it comes to political and strategic decisions. Diplomatic possibilities were expanded too, so you can now wield more power and have more direct control over your kingdom. This filled some gameplay gaps present in the base game. With Warband, subduing other lords and reaping profits from it is a common thing. There is also an option of starting political alliances through marriage. What's more, the developers made it easier for new players to find themselves in the game’s world by adding more hints in the early stages. The world map includes all the locations from the base game and introduces a new faction (Sarranid Sultanate) and numerous side quests to complete.

Multiplayer
A key novelty is the brand new, expansive multiplayer for up to 64 players. TaleWorld prepared seven online modes. There is a classic Deathmatch, as well as its team-based variation. There are also Capture the Flag and Conquest. In the latter, the team controlling most of the locations marked by flags wins the game. Another mode is Siege. As its name suggests, one team has to defend a castle, while the other storms it. The stronghold falls if the attackers manage to take off the flag in the courtyard. First, though, they have to get there, which is made possible with ladders and siege towers. The last two modes are: Battle and Fight and Destroy. In these two, unlike the previous ones, there are no respawns, so you can't get back to the fight until a new round starts. Fight and Destroy again has two teams: attackers and defenders. This time, however, the latter have to defend two objects from destruction – a catapult and a trebuchet.

Another key feature of the expansion are the visibly enhanced graphics. The developers improved many textures and introduced new special effects. The game uses HDR lighting, reflections, and bloom effect. With thus enhanced graphics all armors shine in sunlight.

Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword:

Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword for PC is an enhanced version of Mount & Blade. It introduces a number of gameplay improvements and, first and foremost, a multiplayer mode.

Plot
The story takes place in the 17th century and its events and quests are inspired by the novels by Henryk Sienkiewicz and their movie adaptations. The gameplay combines elements of action, role-playing, and strategy games. First, we operate in the map mode where we control our army, and once a danger is encountered, we control our avatar in the action mode. In the latter case, we control a character in the first- or third-person perspective view and the game resembles a true action title.

Mechanics
In comparison with the original, Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword for PC offers an enhanced artificial intelligence of the computer-controlled soldiers. Bugs such as the AI confusing paths of the soldiers, making them motionless or going to the wrong place are mostly eliminated. Apart from several improvements of variable significance, a number of various new quests were introduced. Thanks to this, the game takes more time to complete by providing additional gameplay.

The biggest novelty is the multiplayer mode, which the original was clearly missing. This time, the game does not end after the completion of the single player campaign. The title’s lifespan is lengthened by the possibility to fight battles with our friends. Various gameplay options ensure more than simple skirmishes to win.

Technical aspect
Although the graphics are still mediocre, they were slightly improved in comparison with the original.

Mount & Blade: Warband - Napoleonic Wars:

Viking Conquest for PC is the second official expansion pack for 2010's Mount & Blade: Warband, which itself is a stand-alone expansion pack, created for Mount & Blade – an action-RPG sandbox game set in a quasi medieval world and released in 2005. Viking Conquest was created on the basis of the Brytenwalda modification and co-produced by its creators, who helped the devs from the TaleWorlds studio.

Gameplay
Viking Conquest is set in the medieval Britain and Scandinavia (terrains belonging to today's Denmark and Norway). The expansion brings both different multiplayer modes (such as Coastal Assault or Warlord) and a singleplayer component which offers a new story campaign and a traditional sandbox module.

The story campaign focuses on the events from the second half of the 9th century, when the sons of a Nordic leader Ragnar Lodbrok organized non-coordinated plundering expeditions to the kingdoms of the eastern Britain (those belonged to Angles and Saxons) over several years. The player has to cope in these hard times, engaging into fights and political intrigues that affect the world. One is required to make the right decisions as to whom will they become allied with and who will be the enemy.

The new map included here comprises over 300 towns, villages, castles, etc. Those represent 21 different kingdoms and 6 cultures. The game world is inhabited by hundreds of NPCs, 200 of which are historical figures. Since the British Isles are separated from Scandinavia by a vast body of water, an ability to both travel by sea and fight on the waters was implemented here. The player is capable of constructing and buying new ships, as well as gathering crews for naval plundering expeditions. Notably, seas and lands are mechanically synchronized, thus one can attack and plunder coastal settlements for example.

The creators remained faithful to the historical facts, which results not only in the presence of the aforementioned, historical characters, but also in the implementation of those items, formations and combat units that were made use of in the historical period. It is also worth noticing, that the game offers a complex system of religion, as well as an opportunity to create one's own camps. The mechanics behind laying sieges were also enriched in this expansion.

Technical aspects
Viking Conquest for PC utilizes the same engine the base game was powered by – although the visuals present are average-quality at best, several improvements were introduced. What also went through changes in this expansion, are such technical aspects as the in-game AI, which was improved.
