Note : While we've done quite a few Edgar Allan Poe adaptations from the 60s, they were popular all the way back to the classic era, and here's one from the days when Universal was the horror studio par excellence, starring Bela Lugosi, no less. Too bad the plot is a fucking mess, but it features attractive production design and cinematography (clearly inspired by German expressionist films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) and good performances from the whole cast, which, aside from Lugosi, includes Sidney Fox, Leon Ames, Bert Roach, Betty Ross Clarke, Brandon Hurst, D'Arcy Corrigan, and Noble Johnson. Worth it for the visuals, if nothing else.
In mid 19th century Paris, mad scientist and carnival showman Dr. Mirakle abducts young women and injects them with monkey blood, in an attempt to create a mate for his talking ape Erik. Pierre Dupin, his fiancée Camille, and their friends, visit Mirakle's exhibition, where Mirakle, Erik, and Mirakle's assistant Janos all take a fancy to Camille. Janos follows them to find out where Camille lives. Simultaneously, the corpse of one of Mirakle's victims is found, and the police are investigating. Pierre, who's a medical student and amateur detective, bribes the morgue attendant to allow him to examine the victim's blood, and he detects a foreign substance. After some back and forth, Mirakle send Erik to abduct Camille, which accused of the crime, but when Camille's mother is found dead, stuffed into the chimney and clutching a piece of fur from an ape, all signs point to Mirakle, and Pierre and the police rush to rescue Camille.
This is a pretty good restoration for a film this old, with nice contrast, fairly decent detail, and reasonably controlled grain, and it's pretty clean. Dual mono track sounds fine, and the commentary tracks are pretty interesting.
