Note : A classic 80s sci-fi horror comedy here, which wastes little time to get going, and just keeps throwing ideas out there. The cast is solid, led by Catherine Mary Stewart (The Last Starfighter) and Kelli Maroney, who we last saw in Chopping Mall, backed up by Robert Beltran, Sharon Farrell, and our old friend Mary Woronov. Do you like zombies, the end of the world, arcade games, and neon? This is definitely for you.
The earth is passing through the tail of a comet, an event which has not occurred for 65 million years, coincidentally as long as the dinosaurs have been extinct. Large crowds gather outside to celebrate, while Reggie, who works at a local cinema, spends the night in the steel-lined projection room with her projectionist boyfriend, and her sister Sam has an argument with her stepmother and sleeps outside in a steel shed. The next morning, most people are gone, with empty clothes and piles of red dust everywhere. Reggie's boyfriend goes outside and is killed by a zombie, which Reggie also encounters, but she escapes on her boyfriend's motorcycle. The two meet up and go to a local radio station since they think the broadcast from there is live, but find it's actually a recording, then run into fellow survivir Hector, who spent the night sleeping in the back of his truck. A group of scientists in the desert conclude the zombies will eventually also turn to dust, and set out to find the survivors in the city, while the group goes to a mall and gets into a gunfight with evil stockboys. As the different groups converge, it's revealed the scientists might have less than pure motives, and loyalties are tested as everyone tries to find out the truth and survive in this new, depopulated world.
This is a very nice 4k remaster, with poppy color, great contrast, decent but period appropriate sharpness, and mostly subtle, tight grain. 5.1 remaster also sounds great, the original dual mono is fine, and the commentary tracks are a lot of fun. A near-perfect presentation.
