Young artist Kurt Barnert (Tom Schilling) has fled to West-Germany, but he continues to be tormented by the experiences he made in his childhood and youth in the Nazi years and during the GDR-regime. When he meets the student Ellie (Paula Beer), he is convinced that he has met the love of his life and begins to create paintings that mirror not only his own fate, but also the traumas of an entire generation.
Dresda, 1938. Kurt Barnert ha pochi anni e una passione segreta per la zia Elizabeth, una fanciulla sensibile con cui frequenta i musei, fa lunghe passeggiate e suona il piano. Prodigiosa ma fragile nella Germania nazista non c'è più spazio per le persone come lei. Ricoverata in un ospedale psichiatrico fa appello al cuore del Professor Carl Seeband perché non la sterilizzi ma il suo destino sarà più crudele e preludio di uno sterminio abominevole. Sopravvissuto al bombardamento di Dresda e cresciuto nel blocco dell'Est, Kurt ha un talento per il disegno e apprende gli studi classici imposti dal realismo socialista. Ma l'incontro con Ellie, figlia del ginecologo nazista che ha condannato sua zia, e il passaggio all'Ovest, cambieranno il suo destino artistico e riemergeranno il rimosso.
