1944: tornato in Germania dalla campagna d'Africa, dove è stato ferito gravemente, il colonnello Claus von Stauffenberg, un aristocratico tedesco, si unisce alla Resistenza ed entra a far parte dell'operazione Vakyrie, un piano che mira alla presa del potere da parte di un governo ombra una volta morto Hitler. Von Stauffenberg assumerà un ruolo centrale nel piano: sarà proprio lui a dover portare avanti il colpo di stato, uccidendo di sua mano il Führer. Il film è ispirato a fatti realmente accaduti: il vero von Stauffenberg fu a capo di un piano – noto come il Complotto del 20 luglio – che mirava ad abbattere il nazismo e a porre fine alla guerra assassinando Adolf Hitler.
