Description:

* Patricia Highsmith - Collected Fiction and Non-Fiction (38 books)

PATRICIA HIGHSMITH (1921 – 1995)
was an American novelist and short story writer widely known for her psychological thrillers, in which she delved into the nature of guilt, innocence, good, and evil. She wrote 22 novels and numerous short stories throughout her career spanning nearly five decades, and her work has led to more than two dozen film adaptations. Her writing derived influence from existentialist literature, and questioned notions of identity and popular morality. She was dubbed "the poet of apprehension" by novelist Graham Greene.

Her first novel, STRANGERS ON A TRAIN (1950), proved modestly successful upon publication in 1950, and Alfred Hitchcock's 1951 film adaptation of the novel enhanced her reputation. Writing under the pseudonym Claire Morgan, Highsmith's mined her personal life for her second novel, THE PRICE OF SALT (1952). Its groundbreaking happy ending and departure from stereotypical conceptions about lesbians made it stand out in lesbian fiction. Highsmith finally acknowledged authorship of the novel publicly when she agreed to the 1990 republication entitled CAROL .

In 1955, Highsmith wrote THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY (1955), a novel about Tom Ripley, a charming criminal who murders a rich man and steals his identity. She wrote four sequels about Ripley's exploits as a con artist and serial killer who always gets away with his crimes: RIPLEY UNDER GROUND (1970), RIPLEY'S GAME (1974), THE BOY WHO FOLLOWED RIPLEY (1980), and RIPLEY UNDER WATER (1991). The series — collectively called "The Ripliad" — remain some of Highsmith's most popular works.

She famously preferred the company of animals to that of people and stated in a 1991 interview, "I choose to live alone because my imagination functions better when I don't have to speak with people."
