Note : Further proof that Kathryn Bigelow was really cool before she started simping for the empire, here's the best known and most sucessful of her early work, a film which also started Keanu Reeves' action career, and was maybe the high point of Patrick Swayze's superstardom, as this came right after Ghost. It also features a very solid supporting cast, from Gary Busey to Lori Petty, John C. McGinley, Vincent Klyn, a Red Hot Chili Pepper, and an uncredited Tom Sizemore. Sharp-eyed audience members who are also avid readers of Cahiers du Cinéma will probably notice that the plot is very similar to that of The Fast and The Furious, and indeed this was a major inspiration for that. It's fast-paced, well-acted, and much better both as film and as entertainment than it has any right to be.
Former college football quarterback Johnny Utah is assigned to assist veteran agent Pappas to investigate a string of bank robberies where the robbers wear rubber masks depicting ex-presidents. Pappas has a hunch the robbers might be surfers, and Utah goes undercover, convinving surfing waitress Tyler to teach him how to surf. He meets Bodhi, a philosopher king amongst surfing men, and they develop a friendship as Utah finds himself enjoying the surfing life. Clues point to a rival group of surfers as the bank robbers, but this turns out to be false, and Utah starts to suspect that his new friends might be directly involved, which leads to questioning loyalties, complications with both the surfers and his law enforcement colleagues, and a string of really bitchin' action sequences.
This is a very nice 4k remaster, very subtle but noticeable grain, good contrast and color without abandoning the period look, fairly sharp without being too crisp. 5.1 track sounds good, try the other soundtracks for some variety, shame about the lack of commentary tracks, though.
