Note : The second of two collaborations between director Pavlou and famed horror writer Clive Barker, who wrote the screenplay for this based on his own short story, this is the better of the two films, although it definitely has flaws, not least the kind of goofy monster suit, but this is at its heart a pretty solid folk horror with some cool concepts and set in the always interesting Irish countryside. The huge rubber mask demon also pisses on a dude, so there's that. The cast includes David Dukes, Niall Tóibín, Cora Lunny, Ronan Wilmot, and Donal McCann.
Howard is researching some vaguely defined religious history stuff, and travels with his family to rural Ireland. While he's taking photos of some graves, a local man is stubbornly trying to uproot a standing stone in his field when lightning suddenly strikes it, releasing a demonic monster trapped underneath it. An assistant at the local church sends Howard to speak to the priest, and then feels compelled to place his hand on the altar, which makes him have an intense vision which seemingly drives him mad. Howard asks the priest for the parish records, but they find they've been stolen. In the meantime, the monster, named Rawhead, starts killing people around the countryside. When it kills Howard's son, Howard is determined to research local lore to destroy the monster, while the church assistant starts working to help it, and it all leads to a showdown using ancient artifacts to determine their final fate.
This is billed as a 4k remaster scanned from the original camera negative, but honestly doesn't quite look like one, with murky shadows and weird grain, and it might be that the original negative is just chronically underexposed. Otherwise it looks fine, with decent color and detail. The 5.1 remaster sounds fine, as does the original stereo, and the two commentary tracks are fine, although as usual I'm not a huge fan of the Hysteria Continues guys.
