[font=comic sans]Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow è un film di fantascienza del 2004 scritto e diretto da Kerry Conran. Prodotto dalla Filmauro di Aurelio De Laurentiis.
La pellicola è nata dalla passione e dall'ostinazione dello sceneggiatore e regista, che prima di potersi avvalere dei mezzi degni di una vera produzione cinematografica aveva cominciato a "crearselo da solo", lavorando per quattro anni con il suo computer Apple per girare sei minuti di film in grafica computerizzata. Interamente realizzato in Gran Bretagna, iniziato come una produzione indipendente, il film ha attirato capitali internazionali.
Il film è stato intermente girato su sfondo blu e, a parte gli attori, tutto è aggiunto in grafica computerizzata in fase di postproduzione. Tra gli interpreti figura anche il grande attore scomparso Laurence Olivier, "resuscitato" grazie alle moderne tecnologie degli effetti speciali (la sua voce e alcuni spezzoni dell'attore da giovane sono stati riutilizzati per dare vita al misterioso personaggio del dott. Totenkopf).
Conran, grande appassionato di fantascienza, ha disseminato il film di omaggi (come i suoni dei laser in stile Guerra dei mondi ed il numero della stanza del dott. Jennings, 1138, un riferimento al film d'esordio di George Lucas L'uomo che fuggì dal futuro, il cui titolo originale è THX1138).
Atmosfere noir in una avventura fantascientifica dai sapori classici. New York, 1939: La agguerrita giornalista Polly Perkins segue il caso delle sparizioni dei più importanti scienziati del pianeta quando uno squadrone di giganteschi robot attacca la città sotto lo sguardo incredulo delle persone. Polly, decisa a chiarire il mistero che sta dietro alla sconvolgente vicenda, chiederà l'aiuto di Joe ""Sky Captain"" Sullivan, ufficiale dell'aviazione e sua vecchia fiamma. I due indagheranno fino a scoprire che dietro agli attacchi si cela il famigerato Dottor Totenkopf, scienziato pazzo con distruttive manie di grandezza. Detto così potrà sembrare pochino, ma, come vedremo, la linearità dell'intreccio risulterà essere parte integrante del fascino di questo sorprendente titolo. Scansato l'equivoco sull'abuso del digitale, noto il fatto che il film sia stato pensato per sfruttare i vantaggi derivanti da tali prospettive, se si temeva un risultato ""freddo"" da subito ci si rende conto che il seppia sfumato regala ad ambienti e personaggi calore e omogeneità visiva più che gradevoli. Lo stile è veramente accattivante e sin dalle prime battute si respirano fumose atmosfere anni '40 che sfoceranno in seguito nel trionfo di stupendi scenari. Pur non passando da subito inosservata (sarebbe chiedere troppo) la tecnologia non snatura la passione che traspare da ogni istante di girato e gli effetti visivi risultano essere solo il mezzo, l'unico possibile, usato dall'esordiente regista Kerry Conran per realizzare il sogno a cui correva dietro da anni. Davanti al solido concept che sta dietro al progetto il tanto chiacchierato "digitale" si presta quindi ad assumere il brillante ruolo di sfondo che gli compete. La storia narrata si rivela un delizioso cocktail di fantascienza classica collocato in un misterioso contesto noir. Ritroviamo in scenari, oggetti, acconciature e creature meccaniche il gusto per noi retrò dei fumetti e della cultura dell'epoca. La sceneggiatura ricalca i canoni di un genere che fa della semplicità il suo fascino ed è supportata da una regia che non perde un colpo, rispettando i giusti tempi scenici. In questo contesto, per tornare a un discorso lasciato aperto, la necessaria prevedibilità della trama è un punto di forza: accade tutto ciò che deve accadere esattamente nel momento in cui deve accadere, nel rispetto rigoroso e coerente della linea scelta. In controtendenza di intenti e toni con le produzioni del panorama attuale di Hollywood, ci troviamo davanti a qualcosa di paradossalmente nuovo. Buonissima prova del cast, capitanato da una Gwyneth Paltrhow impeccabile, che incarna lo spirito del film e da subito rassicura lo spettatore. Sin dalle scene iniziali dell'invasione, che ricordano da vicino il primo Godzilla, ritroviamo un carosello di citazioni e omaggi; alcune musiche evocano infatti sensazioni, atmosfere e rimandi che ai fan di Star Wars non potranno sfuggire, soprattutto in relazione ad alcune sequenze. Progetto originale permeato di magia che pesca con stile dal passato le proprie carte vincenti, l'opera non fatica a trovare un suo equilibrio e si lascia ammirare. Inutile sottolineare ulteriormente l'incisività di un titolo che non si dimenticherà facilmente, indiscussi meriti pionieristici da blue-screen a parte. Un Gioiellino [/font]
