Gli Stray Cats sono una band rockabilly di Long Island (nello stato di New York) formata nel 1979 dal cantante e chitarrista Brian Setzer insieme ai compagni di scuola Slim Jim Phantom e Lee Rocker.
ll gruppo nasce nel '79 in piena ondata Punk, ma si differenzia subito per lo stile e per la musicalità tipica della musica degli anni '50 che, da tempo, era passata di moda. La strumentazione è semplice come non mai: una chitarra elettrica, un contrabbasso e una semibatteria, il tutto farcito dalla voce unica di Brian Setzer. Il successo, quindi, non tarda ad arrivare e la band inizia a farsi conoscere nella scena musicale di New York per l'enorme energia che si sprigionava dai loro concerti. Nel 1980 gli Stray Cats cercano di allargare i propri orizzonti nel Regno Unito dove riescono a pubblicare qualche singolo. Ed è proprio a Londra l'incontro con il produttore Dave Edmunds (già impegnato nel Rockabilly con i Rockpile), che nel 1981 riuscirà a ottenere un contratto per un album con la Arista Records. Il successo dell'album Stray Cats supera ogni aspettativa e la casa discografica si deve pentire di aver pubblicato l'album solo in Europa.
Il successo, però, dura poco e sempre nel 1981, l'album Gonna Ball viene accolto da molti giudizi negativi costringendo gli Stray Cats a tornare negli Stati Uniti. Nel 1982 viene firmato il contratto con la EMI America per il terzo album Built For Speed composto sia da inediti e sia da canzoni già uscite nel Regno Unito. Con questo album, la band, raggiunge il successo anche negli USA e l'anno successivo decide di provare con un secondo album Rant N' Rave with the Stray Cats che avrà un discreto successo. Nel frattempo i singoli "Rock this town" e "Stray Cat strut" scalano le classifiche.
Dal 1984 in poi, seguono una serie di continui scioglimenti e album di poco successo. Rocker e Phantom formano un trio insieme a Earl Slick (il futuro chitarrista di David Bowie), mentre Setzer intraprende una carriera solista. Nell'86 la band si riunisce, registra Rock Therapy e si scioglie nuovamente. Nell'1989 c'è una seconda reunion da cui nascono quattro album di scarsissimo successo: Blast Off! (1989), Let's Go Faster (1990),Choo Choo Hot Fish (1992) e Original Cool (1993). Nel 2004 dopo una lunga pausa esce l'album live Rumble In Brixton (con l'inedita "Mystery Train Kept A Rollin'")a cui seguira un lungo tour del 2007 insieme ai Pretenders e agli ZZ Top.
Nel 1990 Brian Setzer fa alcuni concerti insieme alla sua Brian Setzer Orchestra, mentre Rocker e Phantom pubblicheranno qualche lavoro a fianco di altri artisti Rockabilly. Nel 2006 il gruppo è entrato nella Long Island Music Hall of Fame
